DEDICA TION

Dr. Joseph G. Grassi

The Manor staff, on behalf of the Class of
1987, would like to take this opportunity to
dedicate this year's edition of the Manor to
Dr. Joseph G. Grassi. In recognition of his
continued support of both our class and the
student body in general, Dr. Grassi has been
a supportive educator, counselor, and friend
to many. He has been a member of the Fair-
field philosophy department since 1961. As
coach of the men's varsity tennis team
since 1969, "Doc's" teams have suffered
only one losing season. We would like to
thank Dr. Grassi for his success and devo-
tion to Fairfield, and wish him the best to
come in the future.

Fairfield University

Fairfield, Connecticut 06430-7524

Office Of The President

May 20, 1987

Dear Graduates:

As members of the graduating class of 1987, you have left behind
the good years of Fairfield University and entered into the "real
world" of life after college. I trust that when you read these few
words, you will have made the adjustment to your new world and will
have come to the realization that your four years at Fairfield have
indeed enriched both your personal and professional lives as well
as prepared you well for that world.

Remember that the "real world" which you are experiencing does not
consist merely of a pin-striped army of junior executives -- eager
to move quickly up the ladder of material success. Countless
others -- some of whom you see daily -- the destitute, the lonely,
the needy, the homeless, the starving -- also live in that "real
world." All of these, less fortunate than yourselves, stand in
need of your compassion.

As you begin to actualize the God given potential that you have
nurtured during your Fairfield years, I trust that the values
fostered by your Jesuit education will emerge and enable you to
respond, at least in some small manner, to that much varied human
condition that you will encounter.

To all of you, congratulations
indeed, to the "real world!"

and God's blessings.

Welcome,

Sincerely,

Aloysius P
President

The city of New York gave the Statue of
Liberty a big 1986 bash — a Fourth of
July festival of song, celebrities and fire-
works honoring the great lady's first 100
years.

They call it "crack" on the
East Coast and "rock" on the
West Coast. Whatever its
name, this refined, smokable
form of cocaine may be the
most addictive narcotic ever
sold on the streets of Amer-

DROUGHT

A drought spread throughout the Southeast
during 1986. It was the worst dry spell on
record. At the peak of the drought, crops
wilted from southern Pennsylvania all the
way into northern Florida. Even after some
rain, many farms in the Carolinas, Georgia,
Tennessee and Virginia were on the brink of
ruin.

serious challenge, Phillipine
president Ferdinand E. Marcos
was forced from office amid
charges of corruption and scan-
dal. The new president, Corazon
Aquino, was faced with political
and economic turmoil.

On November 29, 1986, Hollywood's epit-
ome of elegance, Cary Grant, died of a stroke
in Davenport, Iowa at the age of 82. His 33
year career produced 72 films, among which
"Gunga Din" (1939), "Arsenic and Old Lace"
(1944), and "North By Northwest" (1959)

I RANG A TE

The Irangate controversy first broke late in 1986
and has continued to shake the White House
and the Reagan presidency well into 1987. A
trail of covert operations has linked U.S. foreign
policy to an arms-for-hostage deal with Iran.
Illegal funds and arms were also being chan-
nelled to the Contra rebels in Nicaragua, both
directly and via outside Middle Eastern nations.
John Poindexter and the National Security
Council, White House aide Oliver North, Chief

New Director of Student Act

By Connie McKenna
News Editor

in a letter from Richard Rossi, Director
of Student Residences, all townhouse resi-
dents were reminded of the policies govern-
ing townhouse parties.

University policy states that townhouse
parties must be contained inside the units
and on the decks. According to Rossi, a
number of parties have resulted in groups
of people socializing on the lawns outside
the units. "The main problem," said Rossi,
"is that the parties are beyond manageabil-
ity. Party hosts have to remember that
they're responsible for everyone who at-
tends their party, whether he/she is invit-
ed or not."

Excessive noise and drinking in unautho-
rized places are two problems hoped to be
eliminated by stricter enforcement of poli-
cies. Rossi added, "underage drinking is a
violation of state law, and party hosts are
held

the events include: a dance-a-thon, the an-

volunteering time for the Connecticut Spe-

benefit the Boston Pediatric Trauma Center,
the March of Dimes, and the Ronald

Besides raising funds and helping other
organizations, the officers have set a goal
to unify the club members. This includes
holding events for the club itself, such as
intramural volleyball games and socials.
The club welcomes anyone interested in
participating in the events. J

THE 1987 NCAA MIDWEST REGIONALS
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

The volatile and often controversial coach of
the Indiana Hoosiers, Bobby Knight, gave Fair-
field a little too much to handle. Five rounds
later and 2 Vi weeks down the road, Knight had
another national championship.

129

The 1987 MA AC Tournament — Meadowlands Arena

The rafters of Alumni Hall were beginning to feel
the weight of a long and disappointing 12-15 season.
as the '86-'87 Stags entered the post-season
MAAC tourney as the seventh seed. Compared to
the success of the previous year's campaign, spir-
its were down going into the final regular-season
game against Holy Cross. A last second shot by
Jeff Gromos gave the Stags their twelfth win of
the season and seemingly foreshadowed that the
year wasn't over yet. Brilliant upsets of LaSalle and
Army in the first 2 rounds of the tournament put
Fairfield into the finals against rival lona.

130

1987 MA AC CHAMPS!

\

As a heavy underdog to lona. the Stags dug a
hole early and trailed most of the game. With
12:15 to go. Fairfield trailed by 17. A dramatic
rally followed, and with .24 seconds to go,
Troy Bradford buried a 3 pointer to tie the
game at 63. lona answered with 2 of then
own, and Fairfield stood 4 seconds from
elimination. Following a time-out, Tim
O'Toole fired a mid-court pass to A.J.
Wynder, who drove and sank a 2-point shot
that will never be forgotten. The overtime
period insured Fairfield an automatic bid
into the NCAA's by downing lona 73-70. 5,701
left Brendan Byrne Arena in disbelief, as
Buonaguro and his team held the MAAC
crown aloft once again.

The emotion and discipline of Fairfield coach Mitch Buonaguro
has played a major part of the Fairfield success story over the
past 2 seasons. Since coming over from Villanova, where he
assisted Rollie Massimino in the Wildcats' 1985 National Cham-
pionship. Buonaguro has captained the Stags toward unprec-
edented success. Two consecutive trips to the NCAA tourna-
ment and a record of 3903 over the past 2 seasons has given
the team and his coaching ability national recognition. Despite
rumors he was heading elsewhere, Buonaguro stood behind his
team and thanked Stagmania and the fans of Alumni Hall for a
great season. The season also took on another special turn for
coach Buonaguro. when his wife Diane gave birth to a son
Micheal Anthony on March 14 — congratulations on a great
year.

The '86-'87 Fairfield Rugby team survived yet
another season, scoring spring victories over the
likes of Holy Cross and Fairleigh Dickinson. Led
by President Hank "is cool" Blaney and captains
Bill McCormick and James Galligan. the Red Rug-
gers insured a successful and often amusing sea-
son (contrary to the beliefs of certain Holiday Inn
owners). Many felt that the win column should
have been boosted due to forfeit victories over
Dublin and Pakistan, but nevertheless, seniors
Phil Gavey. Terrence Tangney. Pat Wolff. Mike
Steed. Kevin McDonough and many others
helped the team maintain success on the field.
Good luck to Hank. J.B.. James and the team next

Office of the June 27, 1987

MANOR =

Editor-in-Chief

Dear Reader:

Over the course of the past year, the 1987 Manor staff has put great efforts toward making
this yearbook possible. Our efforts have hopefully been focused toward the senior class to
provide the graduates with a memento to last for years to come. We hope that this edition of
the Manor will help to preserve the friendships and memories which Fairfield has given the
Class of '87 for the past four years.

I extend my thanks to Moreen and the staff for their time and efforts toward completion of
the book. Also, our thanks to Mr. Fitz, Bea Staneko and the Info. Desk for their assistance.
Special thanks to Cathy Badour, Paul Bilgore and Varden Studios, May and the mailroom staff,
the Mirror, Associated Press, Tony Calianese, and Jogues I & III. Most of all, thanks to the Class
of '87 and best of luck in the future.

Sincerely,
